In traditional patriarchal Corsica, radical was often synonymous with troublemaker or malcontent. That distrust of radicals became more intense as the revolutionary government came into conflict with the Catholic Church. Even by the standards of a very devout era, Corsicans were seen as particularly pious. The church on the island was relatively poor and connected to the population compared to other parts of France.
