Monty Python's Flying Circus burst onto people's television sets at the end of the 60s. The BBC was a very, very different place in those days and for some reason they were just given a lot of freedom. They broke the rules of TV comedy by playing with the formats. It was very post-modern. But as well as it being kind of radical and crazy and apparently random, I think it was also just very funny that the performances were great.
