The Relationship Between John and the Jew

The final statement of the book recalls jesus own statements earlier back in 16 18. For god so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. The similarities between this section and jesus statements to nicodemus earlier in the chapter are not difficult to recognize. Both speak of the contrast between earthly things and heavenly things. both talk about the receiving of testimony. By recalling these earlier state ments at the end of the chapter, it book ends the whole. It perhaps invites us to draw stronger connections between the conversation between jesus and nicodemu and that between john and the jew.
