The white witch is Jadis, that's her name and we're introduced to her in the magician's nephew. She has been a queen of another country called Chan which she has obliterated with a kind of nuclear bomb as it were. By a strange set of circumstances she ends up in Nairia because of what Diggeri did to Polly on the day of Nairia's birth. A tree of protection is planted so as to keep her away from Nairia for many years. But eventually the tree of protection dies and this is in about the year 900 I think in Nairian history.
