I think the explanation that I've heard with patients and patients, family members is we want God to know that we did everything that we could. It's usually some type of religious or religion adjacent concern. And so a great many people deal with the stress of medical choices by just basically saying medicine is sacred. They don't want to be the sort of person who doesn't care. So they choose the caring, torturing choice.
