The Importance of Being a Person
Sister Simone: Why would something like Mrs. Davis, this highly complex algorithm, never actually develop true consciousness? Because it doesn't have immateriality. Whatever is purely material, and whatever you say about these things, that's all they can be. They cannot have in principle the qualities that we associate with real abstraction, real freedom and real personality because they have to do with something that transcends any particular sort of perception or gathering of information. And for us today, who are now more and more under the thrall of these things, to hear that is very salutary. It's not she, it's it.
