The idea of free labor was that men would be able to acquire a small business, build a small business for themselves and be their own bosses. But the industrial revolution just demolished that picture with its mass production techniques. The term wage slavery was used by labor advocates during the industrial revolution to explain how degraded conditions of work were in those days.
