The u.s. mexican war that lasted from 1846 to 1848 was undertaken during the administration of james polk a slave owning president. It involved not just annexation but also an invasion of mexico pushing back the border trying to get more land it was an unbelievably bloody cruel violent war kormat mccarthy's book blood meridian which i think is the most violent work of fiction i've ever read is set at the end of the wars.
