The Origins of Civilization

In the original inception of a culture, that is what it is. It's the spirit of the countryside versus the city. And by the time of the Roman Empire, the age of absolutism and things like this, the land-owning citizen, not necessarily gentry, but rural countryside, aristocrats lost a lot of their freedoms. Those are the people who mainly produce the culture that makes up a society.
