The Rhetoric of Not Right or Left

The rhetoric of neither right nor left is largely rooted in opposition to socialist and communist currents or at least right wing conceptions of them. Initial stirrings of this perspective can be traced to reformist anti-revolutionary sentiment in late 19th century Germany. In his 1899 book, Evolutionary Socialism, German theorist Edward Bernstein argued for a middle ground between capitalism and revolutionary socialism.
