Starship Drives - How Fast Do They Really Go?
A lot depends on how long the mission is planning to last and that involves many factors. We are assuming no FTL or warp options though if you had those, such a ship might still be great for intergalactic travel. Nuclear fission using uranium or thorium via an Orion drive or Medusa drive or some other variant is probably going to use somewhere around 1 to 5%. And those are top speeds in any case you might be a whole order of magnitude slower.
