It was partly probably the realism of knowing that you had to acknowledge it at some level. Deng Xiaoping, who became paramount leader relatively quickly after Mao's death with sort of a little interim, was somebody who'd been purged himself twice in the Cultural Revolution. So they needed to make clear to everybody just how awful it was. But over time, we see more and more constraints being put upon discussion of the subject.
