Black Ivy - A New Style of Workwear

In the mid 60s, there was this campaign to encourage voting registration in the deep south. Students realized that wearing elite Ivy League clothes really wasn't going to cut it if you're trying to bond with farmers and sharecroppers when you're encouraging them to go out and vote. They ended up having to wear workwear in order to relate to sharecroppers who they wanted to recruit or want to help to go and vote. Black Ivy was about bridging both worlds. And it was bold for Black activists to hold on to Ivy and to claim it in this way.
