If you are going to become a part owner of the s and p 500, that means that you have bought a very small stake in 500 of the biggest, most profitable, most successful american companies. As they grow on a hello, revenues and profits are substantially higher to day than they were ten, 20 and 30 years ago. The stock mark, it works the exact same way. If you want to beat inflation, it's like f you can't beat em m right? Join the people creating it. i'm pretty happy with how things have turned out for me financially but I would teach my younger self that saving is more important than your investing returns.
