How Does the Unemployment Rate Go Up?
As the pandemic was really starting to ramp up, the Washington Post pointed out that the unemployment rate was dropping and average wages were growing up. That seems counterintuitive; why as the country is shutting down its economy, wouldAverage wage be going up? And the answer is how those statistics, how those figures are calculated and behind those figures are a fraction. So if you have metrics that do the same thing in opposite scenarios, the only way to understand what those metrics mean is to dig into the fraction behind them.
