Robin hood disguises himself as an abbot to act as bait. He waylays the king, taking him to be an abbot and takes him back into the forest. And he finds that this abbot is remarkably witty and personable. They engage in games and witty conversation. Eventually robin hood recognizes the king and kneels and asks for pardon from the king for his crimes. The king promises him a pardon on the condition that he enter the king's service. So he transfer his great skills from crime and robbery to service of the royal court. But eventually he finds that he is bored with courtly life.
