CHAPTER

Is the Brain a Bayesian Machine?

There's a debate among computational neuroscientists about whether those data mean that the brain is actually Bayesian or if it just appears to be Bayesian. And there's also some, you know, an interesting debate about whether when you get to higher cognitive levels, the kind of illusions that people fall prey to often deviate from the predictions of bayserals. It might be that at those higher cognitive level, the reason that people don't seem Bayesian is not because parts of the brain are not working as a Bayesian machine. The way that they're encoding information at those higher levels might be a bottleneck in terms of how we can apply that kind of computation.
