If something can't be persuasively argued for, that seems like a signal that it's false. I think there are a lot of things where people have what seem like good arguments, but they, for some reason, don't hold water. But it's not obvious, like it's very subtle. And that's sort of why for hundreds of years, maybe people didn't even recognize the problem with the argument.
