The Colonization of the International System

Newly independent nations often turn to international neutrality, the line with neither of the Soviet Union nor the United States. This neutrality is strategic as it allows them to gain money from both the Soviet bloc and the U.S., but it's also dangerous because it means that the new nation is not defended by either one of these superpowers. The masses have thus attained liberation, but they do not feel like their situation has been totally rectified. These countries which choose total independence are forced to develop a sort of cruel self-sufficiency while others in European nations live in luxury.
