American chefs Ruth Graves Wakefield and Sue Brides invented the recipe during a period when they owned the tall house. They sold the recipe or gave the recipe to Nestle, because they were using the Nestle semi sweet chocolate bars to make the cookies. It was actually kind of an accident. The original recipe is in tall house tried and true recipes.
