The Importance of Responding to Ego Struggles

For some people, knowing that you're interested, even if they're not, is all that their ego needs. And so when you don't respond, or not throwing yourself at their ankles, begging for another audition, or breaking your back to be their backup plan, it's incredibly confusing. It's about a sense of entitlements. There's an underlying assumption that they're only turning down people who are more interested in them.
