The Death of John Brown
The emperor had been trying to keep the United States from dissolving, and so he took a middle position between those who would have wanted to see John Brown executed. He thus stated that Brown should have been confined to an insane asylum instead of being executed. The emperor also expressed his displeasure by discharging Henry Wise from his office as the governor of Virginia, and he appointed John Breckenridge of Kentucky rather than Wise.
