Clarence Mayer's Plan to Be on the Supreme Court
Lillian McEwan was a lawyer for Senator Joe Biden on the Judiciary Committee. She met Thomas as he was going through a divorce and dealing with crippling debt. As they began dating, Lillian found Clarence to be ambitious and determined. The idea has already occurred to him by 1981 that if he plays his cards right, he could be on the Supreme Court.
