Animals Communicate
Dennett: Animals communicate genuine information, useful information from one to another without either of them understanding what they're doing or the information that they are transmitting. Neither the gazelle nor the lion needs to understand this signal, this speech act. It's a vivid case of what's known as costly signaling theory. And it has to be costly. Otherwise it wouldn't be credible. If all the animals could do it, the lion would be wise not to believe. But the lion does believe this communicative act and doesn't chase the gazele that can start. They both benefit. So I guess he's just hitting home that there is, it's not spooky to say that
