John proctor believed that if anyone should be accused of witchcraft in the village, it should be the bewitched servant girls themselves. When his servant, mary warren, started throwing fits and hurling accusations at witchcraft, he beat her until the fits and the accusations very abrupt stopped. Arthur miller took many artistic licenses with the crucible like jon the the supposed romance between john proctor and abigail williams. It's really weird how they do that in hollywood.
