How to Get More of God in a Material Way
He knew that christianity taught that god was spirit. But every time he tried to think of god, he kept thinking of god in some material likeness. He came up with this analogy: The universe is like this giants sponge. And god is like water that fills the sponge, but isn't the sponge. So he's present to every nook and cranny of the sponge, yet still transcends the sponge. For augustine, the key is first to know something that we all have and are, in fact, using right now - our minds. Our mind is an intelligible reality, pure spirit.
