The Importance of Defense in Jiu Jitsu

I remember you saying that you were super defensive because you really couldn't grab the ghee like the other guys could. So your defense became impeccable because of that. I think naturally, as a beginner, our tendency is to survive. But to me, as a matter of trying to understand how can I use their art to benefit me? And it took me some time to figure that out.
