By the time of the revolution, free coloreds were subjected to a variety of laws that discriminated against them solely on the basis of race. A 17 79 regulation made it illegal for free people of color to affect the dress, hair styles, style or bearing of whites. Some local ordinances, dubois said, forbade them to ride in carriages or to own certain home furnishings.
