What Is Consensus Mechanism?

Bitcoin runs on a proof of work consensus mechanism. What does that mean? Up until now, up until this technological revolution that we have happening right now, we have centralized databases. And so if a hacker wanted to hack it like Experian, the Experian database, the credit monitoring database, it's a giant honeypot. If an attacker could get that, they'd get all those users data.
