Locals knew there was a fire in the mines beginning in 19 62, but didn't quite realize what a problem it was until years later. One story from 19 79 that i've seen in multiple sources is that there was a local gas station owner named john coddington who one day went out to check the levels in his underground storage tank. So he ended up checking the temperature in the storage tanks and found that the gasolene was a hundred and 72 degrees fahrenheit. Yah, yikes. And this did make me wonder.
