Introduction

This chapter explores the relationship between spontaneous creativity in expert musicians and the deactivation of certain areas of the prefrontal cortex, discussing how this deactivation promotes the flow of novel ideas during improvisation. It also introduces jazz guitar legend Pat Matheny and neuroscientist Dr. Charles Lim, who has conducted research on the neural basis of musical creativity.
