The Mechanism of Action for Opiates
Opioids are agonists at receptors that were, of course, not designed for opiates. Humans weren't designed to have receptors that would bind morphine; they were designed with receptors for endogenous ligands. The mechanism of action for opiates is that they activate the mu, primarily mu, but also kappa and delta receptors. In addition to pain control, opiates also cause mood alterations.
