When James of Scotland returned from Denmark in 1590, he became obsessed with those who practiced black magic. In that same year, we actually find the first recorded use of the term black magic in an English document. That document was an epic poem composed by one of the most revered poets of the Elizabethan era: Edmund Spenser.
