By the timemc clellan finally ordered an attack on yorktown in early may of 18 60, o mc gruder's forces had already withdrawn the army of the potomac then continued advancing up the peninsula. Fearing he was outnumbered, mc clellan delayed attacking yorktown. He opted for a tedious, month long siege
