Are they meaning to be taking them almost like things or nouns, or things to be talked about? Si, in the way you spoke, mark, you emphasized a when you say they are such that their being can be so their being is a matter of indifference. What he's saying is indifference is not a property that they have. He doesn't want you to think of it as rock is indifferent, as if it is capable of being indifferent. So it's like use and mention at the same time, or something like that.
