Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
The Marriage of Mary and William of Orange
William of Orange was a committed Protestant he was technically the shtot holder of the Dutch Republic which is sort of like state caretaker. If he married Mary that would ensure a Protestant succession a Protestant dynasty from Mary and her progeny onwards because James still didn't have any sons right so Mary was still his heir. It represented the promise of a future alliance of England and the Netherlands a reorientation away from friendly relations with France more towards the Protestant world. But anxiety did remain there it was still a fact that James was the successor the next successor to the throne before Mary or William.
