Before her death, Mary Elizabeth Pennington had been receiving threatening letters from an anonymous sender. Her father thinks the handwriting in those letters is a perfect match for the note on the box of chocolates. John Dunning gives the police a name, Cordelia Botkin. He thought it was possible that Cordelia picked up on the fact Mary Elizabeth had a soft spot for sweets and could have sent the poison candy as a deliberate act of revenge after being dumped.
