Barbell Medicine Podcast

CHAPTER

Is There a Relationship Between Body Size and Metabolic Syndrome?

The more physical activity you do, the lower your risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Men with a VO2 max equal to 29.1 or less were approximately seven times more likely to exhibit metabolic syndrome than those with a VO 2 max equal to 35 and a half or more. High school and college lineman VO2 max averages are 32.8, whereas non-linemen average 40.8. Another study showed that metabolic syndrome correlated to aerobic fitness capacity with those able to achieve a maximal met level of 11 or higher. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was one third to one quarter of individuals who could attain this level of aerobic capacity in 2011.
