The burial rites indicate not only social differences, but also the man's dominant role in society. The old Indo-European custom that the housemaster had unrestricted right of property over his wife and children is indicated archaeologically by frequent double graves of man and woman. Sutti burial comes down from these periods right through to modern India. In the burial site known as the grave of the widow located in Macedonia, the wife is buried along with the warrior.
