The Importance of Corporatization in Higher Education

I worry that the term corporatization, I've been enough faculty meetings to hear that term bandied about all too often. It's become a kind of empty rhetorical epithet that indicates faculty members' objections to whatever senior administrators or board of trustees have done. And also this charge appears to suggest that over the course of the past few decades, higher education has come to be run on the model of a for-profit corporation. That claim is misleading because it fails to acknowledge that U.S. colleges and universities have always been legally constituted as autocradically organized corporations. Instead, I suggest we consider organizing the American Academy as a different kind of corporation.
