Hoover's Racism
A major theme in the book is Hoover's racism, which you trace to his youth. You show what impact it had throughout his career. One of the most interesting pieces that I was able to trace out a little bit in his early years was this fraternity called Kappa Alpha. Its most famous national member was a guy named Thomas Dixon, who actually wrote the books upon which Birth of a Nation, the famously racist film of 1915, was based. And so he can see institutions like Kappa Alpha really shaping his worldview.
