The Role of Chest Wall Compliance in Neuromuscular Disease

Patients with neuromuscular disease have a more compliant chest wall. And therefore their FRC that that lung volume into exhalation might fall below that theoretical volume of closing capacity. So there's this vicious cycle where they develop adelectasis and then their lung volumes decrease, which leads to respiratory failure. Making sure that we have good mean airway pressure in the lungs is essential to caring for these patients.
