The Importance of Porous Matrix Composites

There's a whole class of ceramic matrix composites using porous matrices. If that bond is too strong, we're going to fail catastrophically like a brittle ceramic. In our melt infiltrated silicon carbide system, we actually add four coatings on top of every single fiber. Those coatings range from tens of nanometers to hundreds of nanometers and thickness. It's all engineered to allow that crack deflection and debond performance.
