The Sound Equivalent of Chinese Painting
The poems of libai and dufu are exactly, as it were, the sound equivalent of a painting. The typical chinese painting is usually dominated by a towering mountain which has tim so, you know, conceals all sorts of wonders around it. There's almost invariably, in every painting, there's a winding path which leads up to a little shack where an immortal is sitting waiting or someone who's retired into the countryside.
