The Difference Between Near and Close

We've spoken about collocations before. That refers to the fact that certain words just conventionally go together. Can you think of any typical collocations with either near or close? There's one that comes to mind near and far. We never say close. A near-death experience is one of those situations where a person nearly dies, but somehow they come back to life.
