The Waiting Period for Naming Places After People
The U.S. Board on Geographic Names has a five-year waiting period for naming places after people who have been dead less than five years. Mark Sandman, the lead singer of Morphine, died in 1999 and just collapsed on stage during a concert in Italy. The board discourages names that are feature-based like how an island looks or sounds rather than who homesteaded there. Buster Rhimes is being accused of using gay slurs at a fast food restaurant in Miami.
