In ancient Greece, anyone who needed a safe place to go could step inside a temple and be granted sanctuary. In most cases, people had to leave their weapons outside; the folks pursuing them were not allowed to step inside and drag them out. If that rule was violated, bad things could happen, usually at the hands of the god who was worshipped at that particular temple.
