Charles Guto's Campaign
Charles Guto was at the Republican Convention in 1880 as a floor manager. As James Garfield gave his speech for another candidate, people started voting to nominate him instead. There was a movement of groundswell from the floor to draft Garfield as a dark horse candidate. Charles Guto decided he wanted to get into politics. He obsessively wrote and revised a campaign speech for Horace Greeley.
