The Roman Empire Split Apart, So Did the Essential Unity of Latin

After the ninth century with alcuin and his educational reform, there weren't distinctions between varieties of romance. The final split wouldn't take place until the twelfth or the thirteenth century. In essence, the western romance languages formed a dialect continuum. If we squint hard enough, if we made that long walk to day, the ancient unity of latin might still be with us even now.
