The baby we hypothesize, and I think it was Donald Winnicott, but we hypothesize that the baby thinks that when I am hungry and when I cry, that that causes the breast or the bottle to appear. And of course that's fallacious, and yet that is what happens. The person has way down deep this idea that you might as well give it a shot because this time, maybe your lucky number will come up. It reminds me of that idea of control and mastery that the infant is trying to master.
